Africa and tourism to Africa were celebrated in tasty style on October 8, 2013 at AFRICAN SMORGASBORD, A TASTE OF THE FOODS & WINES OF AFRICA, held at Scandinavia House in New York City.  Hosted by APTA  North East Chapter and co-chaired by APTA NE board members Cheryl Lapow, SAA’s Director of Sales Development Northeast Region, and Peggy Healy, EVP of Montgomery Communications, the event highlighted foods, wines, music and products from the continent’s four corners.

The food showed and the wine flowed.  Some 160 guests circled the floor to savor African delicacies offered by such restaurants asMadibaTagine Fine Moroccan CuisineLalibela Ethiopian Restaurant;Kaia Wine Bar and Ponty Bistro. Caterers included the eponymousPierre Thiam Catering, Hiyaw  Gebreyohannes‘ Taste of Ethiopia and Charmain Sithappah’s The Seasoned Pot.

South Africa’s wines were showcased with vintages from two of the Western Cape’s oldest wineries:  Steenberg Vineyards and Nederburg; along with Two Oceans and a number of other premium South African wines, donated by Dan Goodwin of Distell USA and Darren Humphries, The Travel Sommelier.

Those with a sweet tooth were offered shots of that creamy favorite – Amarula, or tastings of honey from Follow the Honey, a unique store in Cambridge, Massachusetts that sells organic honey from all over the world, including from Zambia, Tanzania and Ghana.

African products were on display, too. Rain Africa let guests sample lotions derived from African plants and graced give-away bags with luscious bars of African soap. South African-born Mokgadi Matlhako, founder of Just Kadi, had guests drooling over her enfilade of buttery leather and exotic skin handbags, one of which she donated to the African Smorgasbord Raffle.

The African Smorgasbord Raffle was expertly conducted by APTA NE president, Sylvia Allen. Raffle items included: A Just Kadi exotic handbag; dinner for two at E&E Grill House; dinner for two at Kaia Wine Bar;  a bottle of Amarula, a bottle of Steenberg wine, a special jar of Follow the Honey honey from the Prime Minister of Tanzania’s flower garden; dinner for two at Madiba; autographed copy of Colin Cowie’s CHIC, autographed copy of Pierre Thiam’s Yolele! and a gift basket of packaged foods from Talier Trading Group.
